The Challenge

The Canadian Centre for Energy Information (CCEI) is the country's trusted source for comprehensive energy data. But their outdated website did not reflect this authority—information was hard to find, content was unclear, and users ranging from analysts to students struggled to get value from the platform.

My role: As the solo UX Designer, I led a complete overhaul, reimagining the entire user experience from the ground up over the course of a year.

Navigating Complex Needs

With a primary audience of policy analysts, traders, and students, the site had to deliver fast answers for both expert and casual users. The project involved working closely with multiple departments, each with its own priorities and input. Each decision required thorough consideration and alignment with government guidelines, accessibility standards, and technical resources, making forward momentum a thoughtful, but sometimes bureaucratic, process.

Strategic Redesign Approach

I started by reviewing previous user research and usability testing. It was clear: the information architecture needed a complete rethink. I worked with stakeholders to prioritize and restructure content, placing the most important and frequently updated information front and center.

Every feature was revisited:

  • Redesigned menu navigation and carousels

  • Improved search and content clarity

  • Highlighted key indicators, energy products, and flagship offerings

  • Upgraded data visualization tools for better accessibility and understanding

I created a mobile-first design system and style guide, ensuring the website was not only visually modern and consistent but also responsive and ready for users across devices. Accessibility was built in from the start, with internal reviews ensuring all users could benefit equally.

The Results

  • Information is now easier to find and more clearly presented, helping users get value in fewer clicks.

  • Stakeholders responded positively to the new approaches and design language, recognizing improvements in both usability and task completion.

  • The redesign positions CCEI as a more credible, authoritative source for Canadian energy information, with a modern look and feel.

  • Mobile experience, accessibility, and site structure are fully aligned with government digital standards.

  • The redesign process highlighted a need to further update and clarify some content, laying a roadmap for ongoing improvements.

Reflections

Modernizing a government portal means more than just new visuals—it requires careful alignment of user needs with organizational realities and technical constraints. Each step involved consensus-building and creative adaptation in a complex environment. The outcome is a clearer, more trustworthy platform that better serves Canadians seeking energy insights.
